HealthPartners has expanded its community clinic network in central and southern Minnesota, adding capacity in the St. Cloud and Mankato areas where patients have reported increasingly long wait times for new primary care appointments. The expansion includes both a new clinic location and additional provider hours at existing sites, part of a broader effort to keep pace with population growth in these regional hub cities.

Clinic administrators say wait times for new patient primary care appointments had grown noticeably in recent years, a trend consistent with national reports of primary care physician shortages affecting many regions, including parts of Greater Minnesota that have historically had fewer providers relative to population than the Twin Cities metro area.

Responding to Regional Population Growth

St. Cloud and Mankato have both seen steady population growth in recent years, driven partly by relatively affordable housing compared to the Twin Cities and continued employment opportunities in regional health care, education, and manufacturing sectors. Health system planners say clinic capacity had not always kept pace with this growth, leading to the expansion decisions.

New provider recruitment has been a central part of the expansion effort, with HealthPartners working to attract both experienced physicians and newer graduates to practice in these regional communities rather than concentrating hiring efforts solely in the more competitive Twin Cities primary care market. Recruiters say quality of life factors, including access to outdoor recreation and generally shorter commute times compared to metro-area practice, have been effective selling points for physicians considering regional practice.

Patients in the expanded service areas have generally welcomed the additional capacity, particularly those who had experienced multi-week waits for new patient appointments in recent years. Clinic staff say same-day and next-day appointment availability for urgent, non-emergency concerns has also improved as a result of the added provider capacity.

Continued Focus on Primary Care Access

Health system leaders describe primary care access as a foundational concern that affects broader health outcomes, noting that patients without a consistent primary care relationship are more likely to delay care until conditions become more serious, sometimes resulting in emergency department visits that could have been avoided with earlier, routine care.

HealthPartners officials say they are continuing to evaluate additional expansion opportunities in other Greater Minnesota communities facing similar access challenges, though they note that clinic expansion requires careful planning around both facility construction and, more significantly, physician and staff recruitment, which often takes longer than simply opening new physical space. They describe the St. Cloud and Mankato expansions as part of an ongoing, multi-year effort to strengthen primary care access across the regions HealthPartners serves outside the Twin Cities metro core.
