A community resource center in Moorhead has expanded language instruction and job placement services as the city's immigrant population, including significant numbers of East African and Latin American families, has continued to grow in recent years. The center's expanded services include additional English language class sections and closer partnerships with local employers seeking to hire and retain immigrant workers.
Center staff say demand for services has outpaced available capacity in recent years, prompting the expansion effort, which includes hiring additional bilingual staff and securing a larger physical space to accommodate more simultaneous class sections and one-on-one job placement counseling appointments.
Expanding Language and Workforce Services
English language classes remain among the center's most requested services, with staff describing a range of student needs from complete beginners to those seeking to improve professional-level English for career advancement. The expanded program now offers more class time slots, including evening sections designed to accommodate students working during traditional daytime hours.
Job placement services have grown alongside language instruction, with center staff building relationships with local employers across manufacturing, agriculture processing, and service industries who have expressed interest in hiring immigrant workers but sometimes lack experience navigating language barriers or unfamiliarity with U.S. workplace norms during the hiring and onboarding process.
Center staff describe their role as bridging both directions, helping immigrant job seekers understand American workplace expectations while also helping employers develop more effective practices for supporting new employees who may still be developing English language proficiency or adjusting to unfamiliar workplace systems and expectations.
Building Long-Term Community Integration
Beyond immediate language and employment services, center leaders describe their broader mission as supporting successful long-term community integration, including help navigating school enrollment for children, connecting families with health care resources, and providing general orientation to local community systems that can be confusing for newly arrived families unfamiliar with how things work in a new country and community.
Local employers who have worked with the center describe the partnership as valuable for their own workforce needs, citing strong work ethic and reliability among immigrant employees they have hired through center referrals. Center leadership says continued funding, including a mix of government grants and private donations, remains necessary to sustain expanded services, and they describe their work as responding to a genuinely growing need within Moorhead's increasingly diverse community rather than a temporary surge in demand that they expect to subside.
